The Public Investment Fund (PIF) is working with the Formula E World Championship to continue the “Driving Force” educational program. This initiative, part of PIF’s E360 partnership, aims to empower future sustainability leaders. The program has reached over 50,000 students globally, promoting awareness of clean technologies and offering educational opportunities in science, technology, and environmental innovation.
The “Driving Force” program uses the excitement of electric car racing to engage students aged 8 to 18. It introduces them to sustainability concepts and aims to equip them with knowledge and confidence for careers in sustainability, science, and technology. By leveraging the appeal of motorsports, the program inspires young minds to explore emerging fields.
Formula E hosted an in-person “Driving Force” workshop at Hammersmith Academy in London as part of its community outreach efforts. Over 90 students attended this event, which exemplifies how direct educational initiatives can influence career aspirations and boost representation in STEM fields. Such workshops are crucial for bridging academic concepts with real-world opportunities.
This workshop was one of five sessions held in July near the London E-Prix circuit and close to Formula E’s headquarters in Hammersmith. Similar events took place earlier this year in Jeddah and Miami alongside races hosted there. These interactive experiences help connect academic learning with career opportunities in motorsports, mobility, engineering, battery innovation, and clean energy.
Julia Palle, Vice President of Sustainability at Formula E, highlighted a survey from last year involving over 7,000 students. It showed a significant decline in interest and aspirations towards STEM fields. She emphasized the importance of linking academic curricula with career pathways through direct business sector support.
Strengthening Education Systems
The “Driving Force” program delivered through PIF’s E360 partnership is one solution aimed at enhancing education systems. It seeks to align student aspirations with future job market needs by strengthening connections between education and career pathways. This approach is vital for preparing students for emerging roles in sustainability-related fields.
Through hands-on activities and interactive experiences, these workshops provide practical insights into potential careers. They help students understand how their academic pursuits can translate into real-world applications within various industries focused on sustainability and innovation.
