Mexico’s Minister of Environment and Natural Resources, Alicia Bárcena, delivered her opening speech during Climate Week 2025 in New York City, urging governments and industries to abandon extractive models and adopt sustainable development strategies. Representing Mexico, Bárcena reaffirmed the country’s commitment to sustainable development rooted in social justice, adaptation, fair financing, and nature-based solutions.
“Climate Week is more than a meeting: it is a moral call to recognize the reality before us,” Bárcena said. “We do not have a Plan B, nor do we have a Planet B. Every second counts in this historic fight for climate justice.”
Bárcena emphasized that Latin America and the Caribbean must prioritize adaptation measures, while also linking climate policy to biodiversity and desertification. She highlighted the need for financing mechanisms to address loss and damage. “We need a paradigm shift that goes beyond the overexploitation of our natural resources,” she said.
Throughout the week, Bárcena will take part in high-level sessions on adaptation, mangroves, the green economy, climate finance, and industrial decarbonization. On the margins of Climate Week, Bárcena will also hold bilateral meetings with representatives from the European Union, the United Kingdom and Germany.
Held from Sept. 21 to 28 alongside the 80th session of the UN General Assembly, Climate Week will bring together business, political, technology, academic and civil society leaders to advance systemic responses to the climate crisis.
