Grupomar Earns National Award for Sustainable Tuna Fleet

Grupomar has been recognized with the 2025 National Prize for Sustainable Fishing and Aquaculture, jointly awarded by Mexico’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (SADER) and the National Commission of Aquaculture and Fishing (CONAPESCA). The award highlights private-sector initiatives that strengthen sustainable practices in fisheries and aquaculture.

Grupomar earned second place in the Large-Scale Commercial Fishing category for its “Investment in the Future: Renewal of the Grupomar tuna fleet” project, which modernized the company’s tuna fleet to boost energy efficiency and reduce environmental impacts. The project included a US$30 million investment in the María de Jesús, now the most modern tuna vessel in Latin America. The ship features next-generation systems that cut emissions by around 12% and reduce diesel consumption through a hydraulic unloading system for frozen tuna.

In its first full fishing season in 2024, the María de Jesús captured nearly 9,000 tons of tuna, making it the top-performing vessel in Mexico, according to the Inter-American Tropical Tuna Commission (CIAT). Overall, Grupomar’s fleet has contributed 17–21% of Mexico’s annual tuna catch in recent years.

CONAPESCA Commissioner Rigoberto Salgado Vázquez emphasized Mexico’s responsibility to advance food sovereignty and efficiency, highlighting the country’s 11,000 kilometers of coastline and one of the world’s largest exclusive economic zones. He noted the award also recognizes innovation, best practices, and women’s leadership in the sector. Leonel Efraín Cota Montaño, Undersecretary of Agriculture, added that Mexico is at “a decisive moment” to establish long-term policies ensuring sustainable fishing and aquaculture.
