Northern Emirates Reimagine the Future of Utilities at CARE MENA 2025

Dubai, UAE — At CARE MENA 2025, a high-level fireside chat titled “Reimagining Water and Energy Systems” delivered one of the summit’s most insightful discussions on the future of utilities in the region. The core message was unequivocal:
The future of utilities is not a choice between growth and sustainability — it is the engineering of both, simultaneously and at scale.

With the Northern Emirates experiencing 10%+ annual growth in demand, leaders underscored that meeting these rising needs will require more than expanded infrastructure. It demands smarter systems, cleaner technology, and long-term strategic partnerships that reshape the water–energy landscape.

A Masterclass in Balancing Growth With Net-Zero Ambition

The conversation featured Thomas Spannring, CFO of EtihadWE, who outlined the transformative steps underway to modernize and future-proof the region’s utility ecosystem.

Key initiatives highlighted included:

  • AI-powered electrical grids that optimize flow, reliability and predictive maintenance
  • Advanced smart metering systems improving customer visibility and demand management
  • A shift toward energy-efficient RO desalination, significantly reducing power consumption
  • Integrated planning models that align growth requirements with national sustainability targets

Moderated by Dragos Fundulea, Vice President at Kearney, the session explored how digitalization, innovation and policy alignment can collectively support both rapid expansion and net-zero pathways.

Reimagining the Water–Energy Nexus

Spannring emphasized that solving tomorrow’s challenges requires rethinking the systems behind them — not simply adding capacity.

“We are entering a period where water and energy infrastructure must evolve together. AI, smart grids, and efficient desalination are no longer optional — they are critical to balancing demand growth with sustainability.”

The discussion reinforced that the next generation of utilities will be defined by technology integration, operational intelligence, and low-carbon solutions that meet the needs of fast-growing communities while advancing national climate goals.
