DHL and Suntory: A Renewed Focus On Sustainable Logistics

DHL Supply Chain and Suntory Beverage & Food GB&I are expanding their partnership to reduce carbon emissions through DHL’s GoGreen Plus service

DHL Supply Chain and Suntory Beverage & Food (SBF) GB&I expand their partnership, a move that places a direct focus on sustainable logistics. As a new GoGreen Plus customer, Suntory Beverage & Food GB&I leverages DHL’s sustainable methods to reduce its carbon footprint. The collaboration is designed to lower carbon emissions and foster greater supply chain efficiency.

Suntory Beverage & Food GB&I, the UK’s third largest soft drinks manufacturer and home to brands like Ribena and Lucozade, operates since its launch in 2014. Its parent, the Suntory Group, was established in 1899 with a founding principle of giving back to society.

This commitment to social and environmental responsibility motivates the enhanced partnership with DHL Supply Chain, as it seeks to accelerate carbon reduction across its UK operations.

Sustainable logistics and carbon reduction

The partnership centres on DHL’s GoGreen Plus service, which enables customers to reduce the carbon emissions associated with their shipments.

This is achieved through the use of sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) and other low and zero-carbon technologies. By opting into this service, Suntory GB&I makes a direct investment in greening its value chain.

The use of low-carbon fuels, which can be produced from waste cooking oil, sugar cane and other biomass sources, can achieve a carbon emissions reduction of around 80% compared to traditional fossil fuels.

“DHL Supply Chain is constantly looking for new ways to decarbonise our business while also helping our customers do the same,” explains Katharina Tomoff, Senior Vice President of Global ESG at DHL Supply Chain.

“This collaboration is a great step in the right direction for SBF GB&I and highlights the real impact strong partnerships can have when both parties have a mutual goal. We look forward to helping SBF GB&I further maximise the sustainability of their supply chain as this relationship continues to grow.”

Quantifying the environmental impact

Through this collaboration, which is supported by a £1m investment from DHL in low and zero-carbon technologies, it is estimated that Suntory GB&I sees a Scope 3 reduction of more than 2,300 tonnes of CO₂e annually.

This reduction is a direct result of utilising more sustainable fuels within its logistics network. The partnership demonstrates a tangible step towards decarbonisation for companies in the consumer-packaged goods sector.

Beyond fuel, the collaboration also introduces major operational efficiencies. By managing co-packing, storage and distribution from a single, central location, the partners cut down on 209,214km (130,000 miles) of road travel each year.

This consolidation not only reduces transport-related emissions but also minimises network waste, creating a leaner and more environmentally conscious supply chain.

A commitment to long-term efficiency

The changes implemented since the partnership began yield positive results for Suntory Beverage & Food GB&I. The move towards a more integrated logistics operation streamlines processes, contributing to both sustainability goals and commercial effectiveness.

“Since partnering with DHL Supply Chain, we see an impressive improvement in the efficiency of our logistics operations,” adds Karl Ottomar, Supply Chain Director at Suntory Beverage & Food GB&I. “Making our commitment to deploying more sustainable solutions clear from the very start, DHL is the ideal partner in helping us cut our carbon footprint and deliver effective supply chain solutions that will have a long-term impact.”

This expansion of the partnership guarantees Suntory a more sustainable supply chain, reflecting its core company purpose. By becoming a GoGreen Plus member, Suntory Beverage & Food GB&I takes an active role in building a more responsible, efficient and resilient supply chain for the future.
